The last Factory 500 Excursion before COVID was a fun-filled day of exploration around Bloomfield. This year, we're headed back to Bloomfield to see just how much Pittsburgh's Little Italy has to offer. Join fellow Factory 500 and Patron members for a behind-the-scenes visit with two major Bloomfield destinations: BoxHeart Gallery and Trace Brewing.

A creative collaboration between Nicole Capozzi and Joshua Hogan, BoxHeart Gallery settled in its Bloomfield home in June, 2001 in John Mowder's former Bloomfield ArtWorks space. Much like the Mattress Factory, Nicole and Joshua of BoxHeart Gallery work directly with living artists creating right now, sharing a deep dedication to the artists they represent and maintaining a robust program of exhibitions each year. Event attendees will have the opportunity to hear from Nicole and Joshua about the history of BoxHeart Gallery, Andrew Ooi’s main gallery exhibition, Without Interrupting the System, as well as Joshua’s personal artistic practice. Attendees will then get an exclusive opportunity to explore Nicole and Joshua’s mixed-use space above the main gallery, where the boundaries between public art gallery, home and personal artistic studio are delightfully blurred.

The next stop will be a short three-minute walk down the block to Trace Brewing for more learning, food, and mingling. First opened in March 2021 for carry-out sales in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Trace Brewing has made a remarkable journey from its quiet opening day to become a destination Pittsburgh craft beer and events space in just over one year of operation. Event attendees will hear from founder David Kushner about the history of the historic brass and bronze foundry-turned brewery, its one-of-a-kind Vocational Program, and its unique free graffiti wall, open to any and all street artists at any and all hours of the day. The visit will also include a tour of the brewhouse and an overview of the brewing process. Finally, members will enjoy finger foods and mingling in Trace’s one-of-a-kind Coolship Room and Beer Garden.

Drinks will be available for purchase, including Trace’s in-house brewed beers and a robust selection of locally-brewed cocktails, ciders, wines and soft drinks. Click here to view Trace's current taproom menu (subject to change).
